Ultimate Safaris invests in global guide exchange

In a show of commitment to conservation and skills development, Ultimate Safaris has once again invested in people through its fourth consecutive international guide exchange programme, channelling over N$400 000 into the initiative since its inception.

The programme, which rewards the annual “Ultimate Guide of the Year,” offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for professional growth.

The 2025 winner, Peter Nuugonya, recently returned from a three-week immersive experience in Baja California, Mexico, hosted by Todos Santos Eco Adventures.

According to Ultimate Safaris, Nuugonya’s journey into guiding began humbly near Ondangwa, where he developed early tracking skills.

Starting his career as a barman at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, he quickly discovered his passion for guiding — a path that has since seen him grow into a well-rounded professional with expertise in birding, stargazing, photography, and desert ecology.

Nuugonya said his journey from Namibia’s vast deserts to Mexico’s vibrant marine ecosystems was nothing short of transformative.

He said that ending up on the other side of the world and being hosted by amazing people helped him understand how Ultimate Safaris’ guests must feel, saying that “it was a humbling and once-in-a-lifetime experience”.

From snorkelling and scuba diving to whale watching and cultural exchanges, Nuugonya gained new insight into global tourism experiences.

Encounters with blue, humpback and grey whales left a lasting impression, deepening his understanding of why travellers seek out unique, nature-based experiences — the same drawcard that brings visitors to Namibia.

Beyond the wildlife, it was the human connections that stood out. According to Nuugonya, engaging with local communities and experiencing their culture and cuisine reinforced the importance of authenticity in tourism.

Ultimate Safaris co-founder and managing director Tristan Cowley said that the initiative continues to create meaningful learning opportunities.

“The guide exchange initiative continues to be a learning experience and a great opportunity for interaction between people on different sides of the world who may have

differing geographies, wildlife, and weather, but who share the same dedication to

conservation and community,” said Cowley.

The exchange programme underscores a shared mission between Ultimate Safaris and Todos Santos Eco Adventures: to strengthen guiding standards, promote cross-cultural conservation practices, and celebrate the natural environments they protect.

The partnership is set to continue later this year, when a Mexican guide will travel to Namibia — further cementing a growing model of global collaboration in eco-tourism. As the initiative evolves, it is not only shaping better guides but also building lasting connections between continents, cultures, and conservation efforts.
