Perched on a rocky ridge in western Etosha National Park, Dolomite Camp combines dramatic scenery, comfortable accommodation and access to one of the park’s quieter wildlife areas.
For visitors wanting to experience Etosha away from some of its busier areas, the camp provides access to the remote western section through Galton Gate.
The camp sits on a dolomite ridge overlooking the plains below. The western side of Etosha was historically restricted to visitors, and its opening has provided access to a less-visited part of the park.
Dolomite’s elevated safari-style chalets are built into the rocky surroundings. Each has a private veranda overlooking either sunrise or sunset, while three deluxe chalets also have private plunge pools. Facilities include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and viewing areas overlooking the plains.
The setting is central to the experience. From the ridge, guests can look across open plains, mopane woodland and rocky outcrops, while wildlife moves between the area’s numerous waterholes.
The western section is home to species including black rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, black-faced impala, springbok and oryx. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Etosha supports a wide range of wildlife, with more than 400 bird species recorded in the park.
Game drives explore the network of waterholes around the camp, with guided morning, afternoon and night drives available. The quieter roads and varied terrain also offer opportunities for birdwatchers and photographers to observe wildlife and the changing scenery.
Back at camp, the elevated swimming pool and viewing decks provide places to relax during the warmer hours. Evenings can be spent around the fire, with the sounds of the bush providing the backdrop.
Dolomite Camp is unfenced, so guests must follow the camp’s safety procedures and be escorted after dark. Its remote location also means visitors need to plan their journey carefully and ensure they have sufficient fuel before entering the western section.
For travellers exploring north-western Namibia, Dolomite provides a base from which to experience a quieter, more rugged side of Etosha, where wildlife, scenery and a strong sense of remoteness remain central to the experience.
