FENATA backs Shikongo’s tourism protection push

In a decisive move aimed at reinforcing Namibia’s reputation as one of Africa’s safest travel destinations, the Federation of the Namibian Tourism Associations (FENATA) has thrown its full support behind Inspector-General Joseph Shikongo’s decision to place the Tourism Protection Unit under his direct command.

FENATA described the development as a powerful and strategic intervention that elevates tourism security to the highest level of policing in the country — a clear signal that visitor safety is now a top national priority.

According to the association, the decision demonstrates strong political and law enforcement recognition of the tourism sector’s economic significance and the critical importance of maintaining Namibia’s image as a safe, welcoming and professionally managed destination.

“This move shows that government and law enforcement understand what is at stake,” FENATA indicated, stressing that safety perceptions directly influence travel decisions, investment flows and the livelihoods of thousands of Namibians employed in the tourism value chain.

The association noted that tourists — both domestic and international — must feel secure not only in Windhoek, but across all regions of the country. By placing the Tourism Protection Unit under the direct authority of the Inspector-General, FENATA believes the country is strengthening oversight, coordination and accountability in visitor protection efforts nationwide.

FENATA further pointed out that the tourism industry has for years worked hand-in-hand with the police and other law enforcement agencies, a partnership that led to the establishment of the Tourism Protection Unit in the first place. The latest decision, it said, represents a natural but significant progression of that collaboration.

The elevation of the unit to the highest office of the police, FENATA said, underscores the value placed on tourism as a key economic driver and acknowledges the need to protect Namibia’s hard-earned reputation as a secure destination in an increasingly competitive global market.

At the same time, the association made it clear that the strategy must now be matched with visible results on the ground. FENATA expressed confidence that strengthened collaboration between police, law enforcement agencies, authorities and the private sector will translate into tangible improvements in safety and rapid response mechanisms.

In a letter to the newly appointed Head of the Tourism Protection Unit, Chief Inspector Christina van Dunem Da Fonsech, FENATA reaffirmed its commitment to intensified cooperation, particularly in the areas of communication, awareness campaigns and prompt action on calls from industry stakeholders.

“It is through collaboration and joint action that we, as Namibians, can ensure that we offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere to all visitors,” the association stated, pledging continued partnership to safeguard travellers and reinforce Namibia’s standing as a desirable and safe travel destination.
