As you drive south from Rehoboth to Mariental along the main road B1, you will pass the small settlement of Kalkrand. Here you can turn off onto the C21, which leads to the even smaller Nama settlement Hoachanas. About 10 kilometres to the north along the C15, you will find the turn-off to the Bitterwasser Lodge and Flying Centre (on farm Hoachanas). Each year hundreds of glider-pilots travel to this otherwise normal game lodge and during the months of November to January, they take to the skies in their glider planes on a daily basis, trying to break yet another world record.
