The Namibian Freshwater Bank Angling Association (NFBAA) will this week hosts the Region Five junior tournament at Hardap Dam outside Mariental. The Namibian junior team will take on South Africa’s Young Proteas in a best-out-of-three test series.

The Namibian squad consists of Leandro Bothma, Rikus van Staden, Drihan Smith, Francois du Toit and Sven von Lieres, with Panna van Staden as team manager.

The inclusion of Rikus, the only team member with previous experience in an international competition, is expected to be beneficial to Namibia’s prospects.

He won the 2019 World Angling Games’ junior section at the Vaal Dam in South Africa.

Head-to-head

Both teams had Saturday and today as their official training days.

The competition starts with the first test tomorrow, 5 July, and concludes with the third test on Thursday.

The top two anglers of each team will then be selected to be individually paired with the top two of the neighboring country for a separate Region Five competition on Friday, 8 July.

These four anglers will earn Region Five colours and will be invited to compete at the South African Angling Games, usually held at Bloemhof Dam. The aim of this extra competition is to give recognition to the top anglers, as well as to share knowledge and experience among the regional member countries.

Meanwhile, this Saturday will be a development opportunity for juniors and will be open to the public.
